Kuala Lumpur International Batik Convention & Exhibition 2009

The Kuala Lumpur International Batik (KLIB) Convention and Exhibition is a platform for batik lovers to come together in the spirit of sharing. It is the focused event which displays the various facets of Batik. It was organized and sponsored by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia, a non-profit organization committed to helping Malaysians "develop their potential as productive and responsible citizens through the provision of appropriate assistance".

The Kuala Lumpur International Batik Convention and Exhibition 2009 was held on 11th-13th December 2009. The key objectives are to develop an international network of batik enthusiasts, to foster closer ties amongst batik producing countries, to create a forum for batik craft and industry people across the world, to share techniques, innovations, technology and marketing strategies for the batik craft and industry, and to focus on the long-term relevance, growth, progress and prominence of the batik craft and industry internationally.

The theme of the Convention, "The Business of Batik", is intentionally wide, allowing for participant from anyone related to the batik craft and indusrty including the wider areas of textiles and textile production, fashion and marketing, new technology, new trends in textile decoration, new applications as well as batik art history and craft and heritage preservation. This convention brought speakers and experts from around the world to Kuala Lumpur to share their knowledge and expertise. There was also the Piala Seri Endon batik design competition which provided a platform for Malaysia's batik making talents to show their stuff.

Batik is really huge in Malaysia. I can say that this convention and exhibition, it is a big effort with so many activities promoting Malaysian batik in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and with key people from around the world who champions batik convening at the KLCC Convention Center for the Kuala Lumpur International Batik (KLIB) Convention and Exhibition 2009.

Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia (PENYAYANG), the charity foundation of which the late YABhg Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood was Founder and Chairman, and its wholly owned subsidiary, Batik Guild Sdn Bhd, were the organizers of the Malaysia Batik-Crafted For The World movement's activities. Activities under the movement included an annual Batik Week/Extravaganza, the establishment of the annual Piala Seri Endon batik design competition, local and international road shows and more.

The Piala Seri Endon was conceived to discover and to provide a platform for support, recognition and encouragement of Malaysia's batik-making talent. It is an annual event that is open only to Malaysians over 18 years of age, and is part of the Malaysia Batik-Crafted for the World movement, Datin Paduka Seri's brainchild. The Piala Seri Endon batik design competition, named after the late YABhg Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood. Launched on 8 September 2003, the Piala had just one category. Expansion in categories is in line with the movements aim to broaden the base of products to which batik can be applied so as to address the problem of a lack diversification in products to which batik is applied. The competition has seen keen interest from students, batik producers, fashion and textile designers and artists.

This event brought many batik artists, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts together at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. By promoting batik at KLIB, it is showing the world the beauty of Malaysian's heritage and cultural values. It also influence the world with more contemporary versions of batik.

In view of globalization, this kind of event could also create a multiracial batik, a version of batik that fuses elements from different cultures. Ultimately, through the right approach, we should be able to get batik to become more popular and acceptable internationally.

In our country Malaysia, whether you are an Indian, Chinese or Malay, batik can be the creative elements to get united among us, beautifully experienced by the enchanting cultures of multiracial country. In fact, all these talk of Malay/Chinese/Indian unity is well against the spirit of 1Malaysia.

A great opportunity of mine! I managed to capture this moment! Featuring Puan Nori Abdullah, the Chairman of Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia.

The competition will continue to be organized by PENYAYANG, in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage.
