Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur

The Palace of Culture, or more familiarly known as Istana Budaya, is Malaysia's national theatre. This prominent landmark is on the Top Ten list of most sophisticated theatres in the world! It is used for local as well as foreign art and cultural performances.

Istana Budaya is owned by The Ministry Of Culture, Arts and Tourism, Malaysia. It was established for the promotion of culture and the arts in Malaysia. It is proud to be the first theatre in Asia equipped with cutting-edge stage equipment that is on par with the Royal Albert Hall in London!

My High Dynamic Range's sight is overwhelmed by the building's architecture, which is very impressive with its various blend of Malay culture. The site which is nearby Lake Titiwangsa makes the Istana Budaya even more attractive.

The building represents Malaysia and its culture in many ways. The traditional Malay house is reflected in the overall design of the building.

The roof resembles a traditional floral and leaf arrangement.

Carrying the architectural design of a Malay house further, the layout of the building follows closely the verandah (serambi) for the lobby, the living room for the auditorium and the kitchen for the stage and adjoining rehearsal area.

Water lily-like fountain flows breezily, for you to relax and enjoy the sounds from the pool's reflection.

The Malaysian wau or kite is used as a design motif for theater's interior especially its floor.

The building is enchanted with beautiful designated decoration to attract tourists' attention!

High-quality tropical wood is used for the doors, featuring hand-carved flower and leaf motifs.

The main lobby on the third floor was designed to resemble a
"rebana ubi",
the traditional Malay drum.

Completed in 1999, this National Theatre was officially opened by the then Prime Minister,
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed.

The grand entrance to the theatre is intentionally designed to resemble the
Balairong Seri of Malaka Palace.

"People First, Performance Now"

"Natrah"
Natrah's tragic life will be the subject of a musical Natrah in Istana Budaya,
directed by Erma Fatima
from 30 November until 9 December 2009

There is a cafe on the left hand side of the building, provides you a traditional food and a relaxing views of greenery park.

Be it from any direction, the patron is welcomed by the magnificent roofs of Istana Budaya that rise majestically above the treetops, portraying the "sirih Junjung", a multi-tier floral arrangement of betel leaves used for Malay weddings and welcoming ceremonies.

The Istana Budaya is an imposing blue and white building featuring traditional Malay and contemporary elements.

The park is full of tropical trees.
